Marie-Bernadette Dupuy and JCL’s series

French author Marie-Bernadette Dupuy has been published in Quebec. She wrote different famous series in Canada and Europe and you can find her books on JCL‘s website.   With an everlasting source of inspiration, Marie-Bernadette Dupuy is an accomplished French author, who seized her opportunity to get published in North America. Her series were sold to 3 million copies! She is known as “Val-Jalbert’s queen” in Quebec. The JCL editions have lots of contacts in Europe. Of course they have contacts in France, but also in Germany, Spain, Italy, Holland, Russia, Czech Republic and Ukraine. JCL has therefore allowed Marie-Bernadette Dupuy’s books to reach out to much broader markets than the sole French territory. Moreover her books have been picked up by a book club, France Loisirs. This makes a huge difference for her! International visibility in book fairs The international book fairs are the prime location to meet publishers. Marie-Bernadette Dupuy herself has met Jean-Claude Larouche (the founder of JCL), during a meeting at a book fair in France. In 2002, JCL published L’Orpheline du Bois des Loups, first success of the author in Canadian territory. Then followed Val-Jalbert, Roy family and Angelina’s series. The two first series remain the most popular. Their stories take place in Quebec and in France. Montreal-Contacts has presented Marie-Bernadette Dupuy’s series at the Frankfurt International Book Fair and the London Book Fair in 2012 and 2013. We were amongst the very few agencies to hold a stand and it was a unique opportunity to maximize the visibility of her many titles. As a Quebec-based agency, it is of utmost importance for us...

A rural coming-of-age story that packs a punch!

Recently nominated for the ReLit Awards 2013, Whitetail Shooting Gallery masterfully depicts the desperation and frustration felt by two cousins and their counterparts in a remote small-town environment. Although their surroundings seem normal and dull, the characters are anything but, as the author gradually reveals their troublesome and sometimes seedy exploits. Infused with racy evocative flavour, the events that unfold are both disturbing and intriguing – a mix that makes for a gripping read and gives a real insight into the squalid underbelly of this small-town semi-rural setting. Annette Lapointe‘s focus on LGBT minorities in both of her novels provides a deeper insight into the challenges faced by young people as they grow up in a rural setting. Her books also address, in an implicit way, the various repressive issues society has with sexuality. Her first book and Giller Prize nominated title, Stolen, was met rave reviews in which it was lauded for it’s unconventional, yet succinct approach. The author has gone from strength to strength in her writing and delivers yet another piece of fascinating modern fiction in Whitetail Shooting Gallery. Foreign Rights are available for this title. The Val-Jalbert Series

What struck me the most when I first discovered The Val-Jalbert Series, written by french author Marie-Bernadette Dupuy, was the sheer volume of the books! Their generous size straight away poses a challenge to any reader and indicates to what extent the story told in these 6 titles has been descriptively and accurately detailed.   Published over the course of 5 years with the first title, l’Enfant des Neiges, appearing in 2008 and the final instalment, L’ange du Lac surfacing earlier this year in Autumn 2013, this saga has gripped readers all over French Canada and in France. It has also been translated into Russian and Ukranian. What is even more impressive is the sales figures this series has achieved with a staggering 1.1 million copies sold. The author has also published other series and novels and has sold a very impressive 2.5 million books worldwide. This gripping story of Marie-Hermine, abandoned as a baby in Val-Jalbert, Québec, where the series is set, is infused with the icy breath of Québec’s winter wind, in a land where nothing must die and nothing must change. Loyal to a real historical setting, it leaves you wanting more and more – so the success of The Val-Jalbert Series, even after 6 rather long and consuming reads is not surprising. Éditions JCL who published this saga along with many more of Marie-Bernadette Dupuy‘s novels, already have a vast repertoire of titles that have enjoyed great success in different languages all over the world. What’s more is that grants are available to subsidize the cost of translation of these books in any language. To find...
